ELCT Secretary General, Brighton Kilewa posted a condolence
Tuesday, July 20, 2010
Greetings from Arusha in the name of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. We have been informed by Ms Nancy on the sad news regarding the death of your beloved Father. We received the news with a profound shock. Pastor Howard Olson will continue to be remembered in the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Tanzania (ELCT) for serving the Church for a very long period of time (1946 - 1988) in various capacities, as a missionary, Pastor, author, music ethnologist, hymnologist and a Professor at the then Lutheran Theological College Makumira (currently Makumira University College - a Constituent College of the Tumaini University of the ELCT). We thank God for the services rendered by Professor Olson in the ELCT of which as I mentioned above will be remembered in the ELCT by many generations. Please pass condolences to your mother Louise and other children - Howard, Sharon and Timothy. "God is our refuge and strength, A very present help in trouble" Psalm 46:1 Yours sincerely, Brighton B.L. Killewa Secretary General, ELCT

Howie Olson--a kind, caring, courteous Christian gentleman; a capable and brilliant pastor, missionary, musician, scholar, and professor. We have known him for some 70 years and have appreciated his warm friendship and fellowship. May the Lord hallow his memory and bring comfort and strength to the family. Jesus is the resurrection and the life.

Dear Auntie Lou, Your sweetheart was a lovely man and the two of you always were an inspiration to me about how to make a marriage blossom and thrive over many years (64 of them!) I always enjoyed Uncle Howie for his intelligence, patience, sense of humor and especially, of course, the wonderful music. He leaves a beautiful legacy which will live on and on, bringing joy to hearts everywhere. Asante sana, tena sana to both of you (including going waaaaay back to the early 50's when you were so gracious and helpful with three little girls and their Dad.) Much love always, Marlyce

SET FREE, SET FREE. OH, WHAT SORROW; OH, WHAT JOY. (Part 1)
Howard S. Olson ….when I was much younger, I was thrilled to see that name in hymnals as someone I knew, the father of my boarding-school friend Sharon and a respected scholarly missionary at Makumira. In later years, and especially in the U.S., I was thrilled whenever my worship communities joined in singing any of those beloved Tanzanian hymns that Howard had a hand in transcribing, compiling, editing and/or translating. The music fills me with warmth and blessing and a sense of belonging.
More recently, visiting Howard & Louise after many years without contact, I thoroughly enjoyed 'Uncle' Howie's warm hospitality, wide-ranging intellect, sense of humor, and his deep appreciation of people and all that his life has held. I marveled at his patient acceptance of age- and health-related limitations which did not dim his inner joy.
Having some subsequent correspondence with Howard about his publications in the libraries at Gustavus Adolphus, I particularly savored his fascinating and insightful "background stories" in Reference Companion to Set Free: African Ethnic Hymns (2004), which expanded my appreciation for both some beloved and some less-familiar hymns. I happen to share Howie's interest in cultural and linguistic nuances of words, and have great admiration for his thoughtful wordsmithery, despite his tendency to humbly downplay his own efforts.

SET FREE, SET FREE. OH, WHAT SORROW; OH, WHAT JOY. (Part 2)
Becoming more aware of Howard S. Olson's specific professional achievements, I was awed by those achievements, his passion, and his faith. Yet this "giant" was kind enough to write that he wished we could be neighbors, and to write real letters which responded directly and in detail to the content of mine, and invariably included funny anecdotes and articulate observations. He also sent me a copy last year of his sermon notes for the commissioning service in 1992 for my parents at a Minneapolis congregation that my father pastored for many years.
It is with deep sadness that I know Howard will not be writing me again. I feel lucky that my life overlapped his in several contexts, and rejoice that his work succeeded in putting some African hymns into the standard repertoire of many American churches, that we might join him in saying with the original psalmist, "I will sing to the Lord as long as I live." (Ps. 104:33). As Howard was fond of saying, tusen tack!

Our family reaches out to your family. Our ties go back to '62, when we arrived at Kiomboi, to be a part of the Augustana School family, and thus, your family, too.
Actions, words and music from your family have continued to enrich our family's lives and our memories of those precious years.

Deep sympathy and love to all the Howard and Louise Olson family. What a privilege it has been to have shared in some of the years of your life. Vivid memories of Howie from many places are recalled with pleasure and gratitude: at Kijota as he burned the late night oil of the pressure lamp working with the Turu Translation Committee on the Gospel of Mark; at Ihanja as he patiently taught us the rudiments of the Rimi (Turu) languge; at a Kiomboi Bible conference as his sermon reminded us of the importance of service with the "towel and basin;" at Makumira playing volleyball with the seminary students after a strenuous day of teaching, all of this with good humor and grace. Now God's servant, Mudimi Ntandu, amehamia nyumbani. Lois (Sangilomo)

This is from Pr. Francis Gunda: East of Lake Victoria Diocese of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Tanzania.
I want to say Pastor Howard Olson has been a pastor to me, a teacher, and an instructor. He taught me Greek. He used a slogan saying, "Tafadeli mwanzangu, chuma faida." That means, "It is time for harvest" if you learn Greek. Most of the students in my class were not able to learn Greek, but to me, because of Olsen's encouragement, I learned Greek up to Greek IV and that was the time I got the chance to study all my theological studies. Hearing that he is dead, it is a great sorrow to me. May God grant him eternal peace. God bless him and God bless you.
Lois, Howard is only ahead of us. We are going the same direction. Death is waiting for you and me as well. God bless you.

We will always thank God for him and the others who helped strengthen our faith in serving in a foreign mission field. He truly was God's servant always. Peace, love, and blessings to all.
