Obituary of Dorothy M. Canavan

Dorothy M. Canavan, 88, of Sun City Center, passed away August 11, 2011. She was preceded in death by her husband of 68 years, Patrick J. Canavan. Survivors include her son, Patrick (Patricia) Canavan, daughter, Kathleen (Don) Barnes, and four grandchildren, Shannon (Nick) Todisco, Courtney Klingman, Jill Canavan and Patrick aka "Spike" Canavan in addition to several nieces and nephews. Dorothy was born in Bronx, New York and worked for the War Dept. during World War II in the New York Ordinance. She was actively involved with the Republican Party of Westchester County, both as a volunteer and working for the Board of Elections. Dorothy loved social events including fund raising, school events for her children, and heading the PTA while residing with her family in Ossining, New York. Upon retirement from Reader's Digest in Pleasantville, New York, Dorothy and her husband relocated to Florida where she was Activites Director for 20 years in addition to serving as Crime Watch Captain at Pinellas Point in St. Petersburg and later Resident Ambassador at Aston Gardens, Tampa with active participation in numerous social events. Dorothy was a loving wife, mother and grandmother in addition to being a wonderful woman who would light up a room and make everyone smile. She touched so many during her lifetime and will be greatly missed for her love, gentleness and wonderful sense of humor. The family will receive friends from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm, Thursday, August 18, 2011 at Sun City Funeral Home 1851 Rickenbacker Drive, Sun City Center, FL. Mass of the Resurrection will be celebrated at 11:00 am Friday, August 19, 2011 at Prince of Peace Catholic Church, 702 Valley Forge Blvd., Sun City Center, FL. followed by burial at 1:30pm at Calvary Catholic Cemetery, 5233 118th Avenue North, Clearwater, FL.
