Nancy,
Suzanne, Trey ,Nicholas and myself send our deepest condolences to Alexander and you. I spoke to James last year when he got into a fender bender. He told me how he doesn't let much bother him anymore. I enjoyed my talk with him that day. I know he loved the both of you very much.
Love,
John, Suzanne, Trey and Nicholas

James is someone I have always admired for the way he lived his life with zeal and confidence that is unmatched. I have always learned from James, in the beginning it was sports (basketball, tennis etc.), and how to be competitive but still have fun, later it was how to get the most out of life by giving and excepting love unconditionally from people especially: family and friends. I know my life has been enriched in countless ways for having James in it; I feel blessed for having him as a part of my family.
I will always remember James with fondness and love for the way he lived his life provided clear aspirations for me to try and attain in my life!
My thoughts and prayers go out to James's wife Nancy and beautiful son Alexander as well as to his mother Francis and brother Michael and the rest of his family.
Love,
Larry, Jennifer, Jaiden and Chloe Smith-Bates

Words cannot express how deeply saddened the entire Lopez and Bates families are over hearing the news that our James (aka Jimmy Joe) passed away on Monday morning.
He will be sorely missed.
I am thankful that my mom, Grace Bates, James' Godmother was able to visit with him a few weeks ago.
My mom called and gave us all updates and how she and James and Alexander were filling each day with a variety of activities.
I was so glad that I was able to talk with James too--he sounded great and forever full of hope.
We love you Jimmy--say Hi to your Aunt Mary (our grandma Lopez)--and save some of her tortillas for us!!

Words can not express the sadness of my soul in trying to comprehend James' passing. To me, he was the larger-than-life big brother who popped in and out of my life to push me into living out loud. He will be remembered in my heart for living life to its fullest, chess-playing as a contact sport, books, passion, movies, basketball, love, church and family. I am a better person for having had James in my life. My thoughts, and those of my family, go out to his beloved and beautiful wife, Nancy, his "mini-me" son Alexander, and all of his family. God bless--
