Obituary of Dolores Schissel

Schissel, Dolores Kathryn (Peterson) of Sun City Center, FL passed away February 6, 2024 at the age of 93. "Pete", as she was known by all, was born in Tarentum, Pennsylvania. She moved to Sturgeon Bay Wisconsin as a young girl. After graduating high school, she attended nursing school in Green Bay, WI. Pete was then accepted into the United States Air Force Nursing Corp, reporting to Sheppard AFB, Texas for initial training and indoctrination. During her service in the military, she was stationed in Yokota, Japan, Brooks AFB, TX, Mather AFB, CA, and ultimately Sculthorpe RAFB in England. Pete left the Air Force in 1959 after the birth of her first child, Michael. Pete met her future husband, Gerald Schissel, while stationed at Mather AFB in Sacramento, California. They were married in San Antonio Texas on October 4, 1957 and enjoyed 54 years of marriage until Jerry's passing in 2011. As a military family, the Schissel’s lived in England, Mississippi, Colorado, Wyoming, Australia, New Jersey and Illinois. Upon Jerry's retirement from the Air Force in 1970, the Schissel family moved to Miami, Florida. Pete reentered the nursing profession in 1976, working in the emergency room of Doctors Hospital in Coral Gables, Fl. She and Jerry retired in 1987 and moved to Sun City Center, Fl. Pete was an active retiree participating in lawn bowling, exercise and dance classes, croquet, and the Retired Military Officers and Retired Nurses Associations. Pete was a loving, giving, kind, gentle soul who will be missed by her children nieces and nephews, her friends from Sun City Center (especially her girls from Bryce Court), and her friends from all over the country. Pete is survived by her son Michael (Joanne) of Davenport, Florida, her daughter Mary Grutchfield of Orange, Massachusetts, her son Anthony (Dana) of Ponce Inlet, Florida, and her grandchildren Cassie, Delaney, Brehnden, Caroline and Jeanne. Her memorial mass will be held at 10am, March 16, 2024 at Prince of Peace Catholic church, Sun City Center, Florida. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to LifePath Hospice, 12973 N.
