James Grant

Obituary of James Daniel Grant

James Daniel Grant, 87, passed away peacefully on the morning of Saturday, September 23, 2023 in Palestine, TX.  Jim and his wife Joyce moved to Palestine in 2022 from Sun City Center, FL where they lived for many years after his retirement.  They had also lived in Houston, TX, Lakeland, FL, Ruskin, FL and Blawnox, PA (a suburb of Pittsburgh, PA) where he was born at home.  Jim was a US Navy veteran, an engineering draftsman, a husband, father, grandfather, and great grandfather.  He was a member of Prince of Peace Catholic Church and served with the Knights of Columbus.  He was a member of the honorary Sheriff’s Association of Hillsborough County; and he was also a member of the VFW Post #6287, where he frequented on Wednesdays to enjoy playing poker with “the guys”.  Jim was well loved by all who knew him; and he will be missed, but fondly remembered.

In his youth, Jim pursued boxing and football interests, and later became an avid bowler and golfer.  He can be affectionately called a legitimate “Pittsburgh Guy” – a guy with Pittsburgh heritage, committed family values, passionate sense of duty and respect, and strong identification with all Pittsburgh institutions such as Steeler football, Pirates baseball, and Iron City beer.

Jim was currently a registered parishioner of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Palestine, TX.

Jim is survived by his wife of 66 years, Patricia Joyce (Kozora) Grant; brother Edward Grant (Kathryn); daughter Gwen Wasko (Francis); daughter Patricia Stapp (Douglas); son James Grant (Melissa); and son Donald Grant (Lynnette). Jim is also survived by seven grandchildren; Frank, James, John and Julie Wasko, Ryan Stapp and Sarah Stapp (Gonzales), and Chelsea Grant.  Numerous great-grandchildren fill in the additions to the family.

Jim is preceded in death by parents John and Mildred Grant; and brothers Eugene and Larry Grant.
