I am so sorry to hear about Mr. Agger's passing. I experienced a wonderful childhood because of families such as the Agger's. He was so generous with his time and expertise. From coaching our little league team to organizing the PAL softball tournaments and to introducing me to the game of golf. He showed a lot of patience taking Bobby and I to Riverside South golf course when we wanted to swing everything like a baseball bat. A wonderful person, who had positive impact on my life. Deepest condolences to the family.

Bobby, April and family, I am so sorry to hear of Mr. Agger’s passing. Just as stated in the beautifully written obituary and other testimonials; my memories include all positive experiences that depicted a caring, genuine, fair and upbeat “father figure”. I always admired the way he supported Bobby (a star student athlete at PHS), and yet engaged with all the “kids” making us feel unique. He clearly had a huge impact on so many people near and far. I hope the positive memories help keep your spirits afloat during this most difficult time.

Dear Marcia and Family,
We are both so saddened to learn of the untimely passing of Gary. Way back in the day Gary was a bright spot in the lives of everyone at Portland High School. Everybody loved him, both staff and students and was a wonderful, much needed liaison between the youth at school, the community and the PPD. In addition, what a wonderful athlete, realtor, friend. A bright light! Gary, rest in peace.

Gary was a natural leader and athlete and we all looked up to him at the PAL gym when it first opened at the police station for after school activities. Gary took us in the PAL van to Charleston, MA. Boys Club ( at the time) when we are were about 10 yrs old to play basketball against a local Charlestown team. We thought we were playing in the Boston Garden! The experience was incredible, it wasn't about if we won or loss but the memory of all us traveling together as a team with Gary leading the way as he is in heaven, rest in peace, warmest condolences to the entire Agger family and friends. He and Billy King, the original "Officer Friendly's!"

Officers Agger and Morrison (Gary and Loren) made huge impacts on countless kids in Portland’s PAL games. I know I speak for hundreds, if not thousands, who were touched by his wit, wisdom, and fatherly ways. These guys were the “friendly Dad’s” many kids never had. I still remember Gary and Loren cracking wise with us kids around the ballparks or gymnasiums of Portland. THOSE were the “best of times” for so many of us impressionable kids who needed care and attention and role models more than at later years in our more competitive, serious playing “careers” in high school. Really, really appreciate what Gary was all about. He helped make cops cool and approachable. God bless Gary and all those who continue to pass on his great example of compassion and service.

For those of us who walked the halls of Portland High in the mid-70"s, Gary was the Great Mentor to us all. Whether at the Expo, Hadlock or Riverside Golf Course, Gary always checked in to see how you were. He had this innate ability to know what we were up to and subtly make his point to be careful, you were walking on the edge where your future could be tarnished.
Gary always made you feel better after any conversation, but yet it was knowing you would never disappoint him with poor decisions that kept the bond for all. Another charter member of Bulldog Nation taken way to soon from us. This country is in so much need of the Gary's in society, hard to fathom God calling on him at this time.
In 1968 Dion recorded Abraham, Martin & John. I have always loved that song. Especially the lyrics "Didn't you love the things they stood for, Didn't they try to find some good for you and Me?" In my book, you can easily add Gary Agger in the title.
My condolences to the entire Gary Agger extended family. Joel Rogers 76

Gary was my first boss... around 1971 Gary worked Sundays at a corner store at Gray and Bracket Sts in Portland. I would run the register and sweep the floor for a candy bar and 25 cents. I was 12 and have never forgotten the experience or Gary's kindness. Gary did not need my help but was simply trying to help out a young kid from the neighborhood. Sorry to read of his passing.

Gary was just starting out officiating when I began coaching at South Portland High School; Gary and I developed a good friendship through the years as he did dozens of our games. I admired Gary very much; he was a great official; one of the best in Maine's history.
Gary was always smiling and energetic; he was a great guy who left you feeling better every time you spoke to him.
My condolences to his entire family on your loss.
I read in the obit that we shared the same birthday - Jan 25, '52; it goes without saying he was taken way too early. I'll think of him every birthday from now forward.

My condolences to the family and friends of Mr. Agger. Mr. Agger was my PAL coach and umpire when I was eight years old behind Riverton school in the 70s. I was mesmerized by his leadership and kindness. I was lucky to have Mr. Agger as a high school teacher at DHS, again mesmerized by the stories he would tell and the passion he had for the subject. I sat in the front row seat and was the only student to get a 100% in his class.
I was blessed to have great teachers, coaches and role models at DHS.
Thanks Mr. Agger

Marcia, so sorry for your loss. Gary was a kind and caring friend to so many classmates of the class of 1970. As a three sport outstanding athlete, Gary never let his popularity affect the way he made friends and connected with so many people both at school and in the Portland community. He devoted his life to helping others and truly made a positive difference and impact to so many others. In this troubled world today, we need more Gary Agger’s to spread hope, compassion and kindness throughout our communities across this country. Gary is not only a PHS LEGEND, but more importantly was a wonderful family man and friend to all. Gary, you will be missed my friend but never forgotten!

Please accept our family’s sincere condolences for your loss. As you know, Gary had a significant impact on many lives in Portland. On a personal level mine was no exception. He grew up in our neighborhood as the star athlete that we kids followed and all wanted to be. When I signed up for Pee Wee football he was one of the coaches. He picked me first and asked me to help him choose the rest of the team because, of course, I knew all the kids and who was the best. Genius. He put me at QB for no apparent reason and We won it all that year!
At the YMCA day program those days things were a little rough and he kept an eye on things and checked in on me. One day I was hurt pretty badly in the Oaks and I found him. He gave me first aid and took me home in his cool car after stopping to buy me a coke first. Throughout Jr HS and HS he was always on the court and field in his familiar zebra stripes. He was the best ref in the state, by the way. As young adults playing in softball and hoops leagues, we still had Gary to make it all happen. When we won the PAL tourney once in the 80’s as heavy underdogs he presented the trophy with kind words about our team and players. He actually knew us and how we played and won.
The last time I saw him was at the Judge Rogers golf outing years ago and he was on the practice green beforehand with Bobby. I had to interrupt them to let him and his son know what he meant to me and many others for everything he did for us. He was a great man.
Thank you Gary. And may God bless him and all his loved ones at this difficult time.

Marcia. So sorry to hear about your loss of Gary—a wonderful man. You and he were at a Maine Savings Bank party when I had my first date with Carol in 1983. Gary pulled me aside to let me know that you thought Carol was one of the nicest people. That encouraged me to push past my fickle ways and keep pursuing Carol. We are now happily married 38 years with 2 children and 5 grandchildren. I will always be grateful to you both for that exchange. Paul Bartlett

Gary Agger is one of the finest individuals the City of Portland ever produced! I had the good fortune of working with Gary for two years as part of the City of Portland Recreation Dept’s presence at the Police Athletic League which Gary was one of the police officers assigned to facilitate the program. As top notch an individual as I have ever encountered. My thoughts are with the entire extended Agger family during this difficult time…

I first met Gary when he was a police officer co-teaching Law Enforcement at PHS. We students admired him greatly! I next was privileged to work with him when I began my teaching career at PHS. We often ate lunch together. He became a mentor and a friend. Next I coached basketball and we were excited when he showed up as a game official. He was highly respected by players, coaches, fans and his colleagues. Finally, I was lucky to become “family” when April married Ed. What a special treat to have Gary and Marcia as grandparents to my sweet nieces! I feel very blessed to have known him and to call him a friend and family member! Love to all the Aggers! Thanks for sharing him with so many of us.
