Robert Taylor

Obituary of Robert Joseph Taylor

Robert Joseph Taylor Jr. - Sun City - Robert J. Taylor, 77, died quietly in his home in Sun City, Florida on Tuesday night, December 23, 2008. Bob was born in Portland, Maine on March 12, 1931, the son of Robert and Evelyn, and graduated from Falmouth High School. He joined the Merchant Marines in 1947 for a brief period before enlisting in the Air Force in 1949. An Air Traffic Controller, Bob was instrumental in developing the Soul airport during the Korean War, saving countless lives while under enemy fire. He is a decorated 'lifer' retiring in 1969 as a Technical Sergeant after 20 years of service. Bob began Taylor's Bait Farm shortly after retiring from the Air Force. With the help of his family, Bob built and ran Taylor's Bait for over thirty years. Never letting life get the best of him, he had survived heart surgery, prostate cancer, bone cancer and diabetes. Bob was married three times: to Ruby Ann Orcutt, Blanche Fickett and finally to Linda McGraw, with whom he thought to spend the rest of his life. Finally considering a retirement location, Bob and Linda sold the bait business and started a subdivision, Bond Creek Estates, in Aurora, North Carolina. When Linda passed away unexpectedly in 2001, Bob sold the subdivision and started a new business, Taylor Properties, at age 71. He spent his days buying and renovating properties in Maine. In 2005, Bob relocated to Sun City, Florida and found a welcoming community of new friends in a warmer climate. A long time friend of Bill W. since 4/12/1974, Bob lived his life his own way and enjoyed every minute of it. He loved life and danced as if no one were looking. His gracious spirit, love of humor, and moments of humility were traits that defined him and endeared him to many. He died with dignity where he always wanted, at home. He will be missed by all; his son, Michael, and daughter, Kathy, by Ruby Ann; Linda's daughter Laurie; his grandchildren, Michael Jr. & Ryan Taylor, and Brianna & Lindsie March. "Whoever met Bob, never forgot him."
