Obituary of Buford Carl Nalls

Buford Carl Nalls, 79, of Sun City Center, FL, formerly of Marietta, GA passed away suddenly on March 4, 2023 after a severe trauma to his head and neck suffered in a fall.

 

Carl was born in Roanoke, VA. He began playing trombone at the age of 10. He developed a love of big band and jazz music, which led to a career as a music instructor. Carl received his BA from Concord College, Athens, WV, his Master’s Degree from the University of Miami, Frost School of Music in Coral Gables, FL continued his teaching career. He left teaching after 30 years and went into computer programming. This led him to Marietta, GA.

 

Never losing his love of music, he helped form “The Atlanta Blue Notes” big band, serving as Music Director and trombonist for 30 years. After retirement, he played with the “Blue Notes”, the Alpharetta City Band and several other bands in the area.  He formed a duo, “Double Standard Time” with his good friend, Logan Thomas, bringing Big Band music to retirement and nursing homes. He wrote and arranged several pieces of music, one of which was featured by the trombone band of the University of Miami, Frost School of Music in their summer concert in 2021.

 

Carl is preceded in death by his parents, Buford and Connie Nalls and his wife of 50 years, Faye Pearce Nalls.

 

He is survived by a sister, Bertha Cundiff, Sun City Center, FL, nieces, Connie Curtis, Sun City Center, FL and Laurie (Jimmy), Williams Shawsville, VA, nephew, Charles (Lori) Cox, Raymore, MO, great nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

 

A celebration of life will be held at a later date.
