I will never forget the hours we spent, walking through the field paths in Steamboat Springs, catching grasshoppers. Those were perhaps some of the best moments of my youth. You will be dearly missed.

My grandmother was a fantastic chef. She could put together the most delicious meals, all from scratch. Fried chicken, biscuits, salad dressings, roasts, potatoes, vegetables, desserts (oh my! The desserts!); the woman owned her kitchen.
I remember one time when I was much younger and helping her make dinner in her Florida home. Her southern cookery was at work. Delicious and decadent smells wafted from the room.
"You're a good cook, grandma!" I smiled, and eyed the triple layer chocolate cake. It sat on the cooling rack, ready to be iced.
She looked at me, and offered a half grin. Her eyes twinkled with the full smile.
She affected an accent. Julia Child suddenly came to life.
"In France, my dear, we use butter."

My grandmother was a enigma to me. Sturdy and solid, one of the few woman who was ever taller than I was. She wore her heels everywhere. Funny at times, bookish, proper. She was proud of her silver set.
We were products of different times and places, our outlooks vastly different. But there were those moments when the pretenses fell away and we were family. I love you, grandma. Thank you for letting me see your kitchen magic. Julia Child would have been proud.
